Reem Island is located offshore of the existing city centre and will be comprised of master planned, mixed use communities. The first of these to be completed are Marina Square and the first phase of the Gate District; Sun and Sky Towers. It is also home to the recently completed Paris-Sorbonne university. These developments boast shopping malls with residential and commercial towers rising from their podiums, landscaped gardens, leisure facilities, sea and canal side boardwalks, marinas and parks. The island is connected to the main island of Abu Dhabi and neighbouring Sowwah Island by a series of road bridges with longer term plans for a light rail and ferry system. The newly extended Salam Street ensures easy connectivity out of Abu Dhabi, to the airport and onwards to Dubai, Al Ain and the Western Region.
